The Greatest Strength: Communion With Christ
Since the soul-enriching path of prayer is open to the very weakest saint; since no high attainments are required; since you are not bidden to come because you are an advanced saint, but freely invited if you be a saint at all; see to it, dear reader, that you are often in the way of private devotion. Be much on your knees, for so Elijah drew the rain upon famished Israel’s fields…There is another especial path dropping with fatness to those who walk therein, it is the secret walk of communion. Oh! the delights of fellowship with Jesus! Earth hath no words which can set forth the holy calm of a soul leaning on Jesus’ bosom.- C.H. Spurgeon
It is truly sweet to know the nearness of Christ and to think that he is here in my house and close to me today. I know the God of the entrie universe gives me access to his throne because of his Son, Jesus. Jesus understands my frustration, hunger, doubts, and problems. May I forsake every temptation and evil that attempts to keep him at a distance. May I work hard today and enjoy the sweetness of laboring for the Lord. It is not in vain!
This beautiful hymn entitled In the Secret of His Presence sung by Sandra McCracken is one of my favorites. I so wish I could play it or link to audio, but she unfortunately doesn’t have the audio on her site. I just love, love, love the last verse. The last line sends tears down my face. If you don’t own this, go get a copy or grab it at iTunes, so you can bask in the beauty of this song!
In the secret of His presence, how my soul delights to hide
O, how precious are the lessons which I learn at Jesus’ side
Earthly cares forever vex me, all my trials lay me low;
But when Satan comes to tempt me, to that secret place I go.When my soul is faint and thirsty, ‘neath the shadow of His wing
There is cool and pleasant shelter, and a fresh and crystal spring;
And my Savior rests beside me, as we hold communion sweet.
If I tried, I could not utter what He says when thus we meet.Only this I know: I tell Him all my doubts, my griefs and fears;
O, how patiently He listens! And my sorrowed soul He cheers.
Do you think he ne’er reproves me? What a false friend He would be,
If he never, never told me of the sin which He must see.Would you like to know the sweetness of the secret of the Lord?
Go and hide beneath His shadow. This shall then be your reward;
And whene’er you leave the silence of that happy meeting place,
You will surely bear the image of the Master on your face.
