Thursday : Loving Other People part III.5

March 20th, 2008

(I can combine decimals and Roman numerals, right?) :)

I didn’t plan on posting anything for another week or so; I have been pretty busy, but I read this today and was so excited at the thought of sharing it for anyone who may not happen upon it.

I would say that Jesus did not replace or change the commandment, “Love your neighbor as you love yourself.” He filled it out and gave it clear illustration. He is saying,

Here is what I mean by “as yourself.” Watch me. I mean: Just as you would want someone to set you free from certain death, so you should set them free from certain death. That is how I am now loving you. My suffering and death is what I mean by ‘as yourself.’ You want life. Live to give others life. At any cost.

– John Piper, Thursday of the Commandment

These are right in line concerning the next thing I was thinking for a Loving Others post, and that is what I want to post about next week: loving each other with the grace that gives them life, following the very example of Jesus. This is a transforming thought from the heart of God. May it be on our hearts for Easter!
