Lesson re-learned…

September 5th, 2008

Husband is always right. Well, at least when it comes to haircuts. He told me maybe I shouldn’t do it, and I did it anyway.

“I really reeeally don’t like my stringy hair anymore. Just a little off, and maybe some layers. Just something to make it a little prettier and cleaner,” I said.

So, while he was away in MD at a conference a few weeks ago, I got it cut. I asked for layers, and I got them alright. My hairdresser is a fabulous woman, and she’s done a great job the two times I’ve gone to her (can you believe that’s how much I’ve gone to get my hair cut in the last 18 months?! No kidding!) She honestly did what I asked for, and I looked at it and thought, “Hmmm, I guess it will grow on me.” :)

Well, it didn’t. I hated it more every day. I felt like a cross between a trendy mom wannabe and a tom boy. Okay, so maybe I’ve been a tom boy before, but I’ve certainly never been trendy. I have no clue what the latest hair style or shoe style is “in” at any moment, so I told Eric later, “I guess she just gave me what’s in-style right now.”

Yuck! It was so choppy. Every time I came in front of a mirror, I stopped. And looked. And looked some more. There was a huge gap between the first big layer and the rest of it. It looked like I was “trying” to be cool but missing the mark. :) I found myself just hating it and talking about it all the time! Eric kept chuckling, and I know he was thinking that I was talking more about my appearance in a week than I did the entire 36 months of pregnancy combined!

I had to go back this week and get it chopped. My glory is gone! (haha) I really miss my long hair, and it makes me kind of sad because my hair takes so long to grow. Eric misses it, too; that’s why he said, “Don’t do it.” But he smiled a big smile when I came home from my appointment and said, “Much better!” So… I guess I “fit in” with most moms, though, now, since it’s short.

How about you? Are you long or short? Trendy or old-fashioned? Do you have someone who tells you not to cut it, and do you listen? :)

Going from long to short is a drastic change that takes getting used to. I think you look beautiful with it short.

I prefer short myself, although I would never consider it trendy. And yes I have someone telling me not to cut it, but I don’t listen.

Hey Kristi! I can SOOO relate. My hair was sooo long and for some reason, I thought I needed change…so in Dec…I chopped all mine off. I have absolutely hated it EVER since. I sort of laughed when I read your blog because for the last few months, I have done what you did to Eric…constantly told Jason I hated my hair. I know he’s tired of hearing it…but who else do you complain to? It just stinks that now I have to wait for it to grow back out. ;( I miss my long hair terribly…and it’s actually harder to deal with than when it was long. Oh well. Time will fix it! lol You look great! I really like your new DO…it suits you!

It takes me forever to grow mine out too. And I, too, went and cut it last weekend. And I, too, really hate it.

Ah, why do I talk myself into it once a year? ;)

Oh, and I think you look cute too! So take comfort in that.

Haha - Thanks, guys! I guess it’s a “chop off hair” bug that gets into moms or something :) Post pictures, so I can see yours!

mine is short…… just a spur of the moment thing last spring and i love it. i’ve always been that way though… i can go from long to short without missing a beat. my hair grows so fast and i get bored easily lol

long=easy ponytail, short=friz and not “jump out of the bed” ready. i have to do my ‘do if it’s short. so for me- long it is! but i must say, your cuteness in the short hair department makes me want to reconsider… but it is awfully humid here…

  • Kristi wrote,

I know, Laura; I love the low maintenance of a long ponytail - at least when I can find a ponytail holder! Know what I mean?! :)

you look beautiful, kristi. i really like it!

I like it, Kristi! I think your hair has always been fairly long since I’ve known you…but I think you’ll eventually like it shorter. Mine is pretty short, but it always has been! It’s actually kinda long for me now. :)

I like your short hair cut. It’s cute, but I have to agree with everyone. I love the convenience of a pony tail!

    Hey, Kristi!

I came over from the High Calling feed. I just chopped off my hair, blogged about it, thought you might like it.

oh i love it! you know i vote for short hair. :) unlike other commenters, my hair is easier to keep up when it’s short than long. so everyone’s hair is different. :) my rule is that if i have to use anything other than a brush & a blowdryer, it’s too much to keep up with.

Your hair cut is cute. I’ve done both long and short, and I think short can be really nice–but when I had short hair and I saw gorgeous, simple, elegant long hair I decided to let mine grow out. When I had short hair it was because my husband didn’t like it long, but now he’s changed his mind and he prefers it long. I try to do what pleases him. So it’s long but I layer it up gradually on the sides. I like it. I also love the ease of long hair.

After having my second little boy just 4 weeks ago I found myself saying the same thing. My hair was short but long in the front and kept getting in my eyes. I just came back from the salon and for the first time in 20 years I have…bangs! Ahh!

  • Ashlee wrote,

I really like it! I recently had all mine chopped off…really short! I have actually come to enjoy it, as it is easier to style and maintain! In this SC weather, it is a lot cooler, too!
